I spent most of my childhood in an urbanization in Rubí, a suburb of Barcelona. Just five minutes from home, my friends and I spent summers and almost every weekend playing for hours on a concrete court. For us, happiness was simple: two goals, enough players to form two teams, and playing until our bodies could take no more.

Teams were chosen in the most classic way: two captains picked their teammates, one by one. First, they chose the best players, then the rest, until everything was balanced. There was always one team that, on paper, seemed stronger. However, over time we discovered that the team with the most physical ability or talent didn't always win.

What really made the difference was momentum. A team could start a streak of plays and goals, begin encouraging each other and, even if it wasn't the most competitive in appearance, managed to prevail. That positive energy didn't just lift morale—it also undermined the rival's spirit, who fell into frustrations and reproaches.

Over the years and with much more experience—in high-performance teams both in sports and professionally—I understood something essential: encouraging and supporting each other isn't just an emotional boost, but the foundation of fluid communication. When that positive momentum exists, communication becomes natural, generating greater coordination in both attack and defense. Conversely, when a team with high expectations starts losing to someone they "shouldn't," egos emerge, lack of communication appears, and a negative spiral that the rival knows how to exploit.

These conclusions weren't obvious in my childhood. They emerged after years of competing at the highest level in water polo and, later, working in multidisciplinary and intercultural teams in countries like Spain, USA, UK, and Singapore. And it always holds true: regardless of culture or context, communication is the decisive factor.

In fact, after several years of conducting candidate interviews, I always ask about past mistakes. I'm not looking to judge the failure, but to understand if they were able to analyze it, find the root of the problem, and take measures to prevent it from happening again. And I can assure you that, after many interviews, 98% of team problems are due to lack of communication.

Today there are many tools to improve team efficiency, but not everyone is aware of the importance of solid foundations. Communication, trust, and mutual support are what make the difference between a group of people and a true team.
